Alf Moore in the National 25 mile time trial championship 1949
Joined LC&AC at age 15, enjoyed three years of cycling and
competition before joining the Royal Navy. He got back on dry land as soon
as he could - in 1947! Then he took up cycling again for five years before
other commitments got in the way. From 1952 till 1982 he did not cycle at
all, then staged a comeback in 1982. In 1986 he took the club 10 mile vets
record for many years with a plus of 6:08 and held it for many years.
His early memories are of 'volunteering' to support the club's top riders in
longer time trials. They would leave Coventry at 1:00 on a Sunday morning, laden
with extra bottles for the competitors, and ride through the night for a time
trial at Newbury. After feeding the competitors they would have breakfast in a
local inn then make a day ride of the journey back to Coventry.
