Roger Gardner

One of the true allrounders in the club he took up cycling early and completed the 150 mile Birmingham to Llangollen and back early season reliability trial many times as a youngster - sometimes getting into trouble at home for failing to get up for school on Monday morning!

He has ridden road races in Britain and abroad, competed in cyclo-cross and time trials. His racing successes include

  • 5th in Bognor Regis road race
  • 13th in the 46 mile road race in the Guernsey festival of Cycling in 1972
  • 5th and 6th in Isle of Man kermesses in 1975
  • 12th in his first ever 100 mile event, the Manchester Wheelers open
  • Rode the 3 peaks cyclo-cross for about ten years in the eighties and early nineties, his fastest time being 4:34:19 in 1983 to finish in 69th position
  • Clocked 2:07:59 for a 50 mile time trial at Bawtry, Yorkshire, the second fastest 50 ridden by a club member in 10 years
  • Broke the club 2-up 25 m record in 1981 with John Oxtoby with 57:31 in a Rutland CC event.

Currently club President, Roger has filled most of the club's offices over the forty three years of his membership. He was awarded life membership in 1984.
