Another allrounder Phil Galpin competes in time trials, cyclo-cross and
cross-country running. In 2003 he completed the 3 peaks cyclo-cross race.
Often billed as the world's toughest cyclo-cross race it is certainly not
an average race. It includes ascents (and descents) of Ingleborough,
Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent in North Yorkshire totalling 38 miles, 20 of
which are off-road, and 5000ft of climbing. Fine weather blessed the race
this year and an absence of punctures helped Phil to finish 136th overall
in a time of 4 hours 17 minutes. It was his first attempt at this
legendary race in its 42nd running. Rob Jebb won the event in 2 hours 53
minutes from Nick Craig in 2nd place. 250 competitors finished the race.
Phil has also won the Ted and Doris trophy for the inter-section champion.
